My life took a dramatic turn on August 3, 2020, when I experienced an ischemic stroke. I woke up half-paralyzed due to a blood clot in my brain, caused by high cholesterol I had neglected during the pandemic. Like many, I spent those months cooped up at home, indulging in comfort food and ignoring my health. Although I had noticed high blood pressure readings at the pharmacy, I didn’t realize the seriousness of my condition until it was too late. At the time, I was also 30 pounds overweight.
While I was in the hospital, a nurse questioned whether I’d be able to run my business again, based on whether I could successfully draw a clock. Instead of feeling discouraged, I felt empowered. I thought, “No one can tell me what I can or can’t do.” That moment ignited a fire in me to prove that I could overcome any challenge.
I was then recruited out of my hospital bed to attend a rehabilitation facility, with the promise that they’d get me up and moving right away. But for my entire three-day stay, I was left lying in bed. Everyone was so paranoid about touching me due to COVID-19 that they barely interacted with me. I was essentially left on my own. It became clear that if I wanted to recover, I would have to try harder than anyone else would try for me. I realized that no one knew me, my determination, and my willpower better than I did—even if my brain was a little broken at the time.
During my stay, I also had another eye-opening experience. A woman in the room next to me, who was more on the obese side, needed assistance to use the restroom, requiring three staff members to lift her. Unfortunately, there weren’t always enough people available, and many times, she was stuck soiling herself. I could see how humiliating and crushing this was for her spirit.
This was another epiphany for me. I could see she was giving up, so I told her, “You have to try to help yourself because if you can’t help yourself, nobody can.” I took my own message to heart as well. Even though I had to drag my limp body across the floor from my bedroom to the kitchen where my phone was, I realized that if I were ever in a health crisis again, I needed to lose weight. Being overweight was not an option. I had been fit and athletic my whole life, but somehow I convinced myself that my weight didn’t matter anymore. I was always photographing other people, and it was about them, not me. I thought no one was looking at me, so it didn’t matter. But I realized I was wrong—I mattered. My health mattered. Feeling good and looking good mattered.
I want to share this message with as many people as possible: You matter, and it all starts with your health and feeling good about yourself. I never want to be in a situation where I can’t help myself and have to rely on other people who might not be available. I told myself I never wanted to be in that position again.
So, against medical advice, I left the rehab facility and returned home, determined to take control of my recovery. Armed with nothing but exercise DVDs and a trampoline, I worked on rebuilding my strength. Over the past three years, through countless doctor appointments and by educating myself on health essentials like lipid panels, blood pressure, and A1C levels (as I was also prediabetic), I came to understand the importance of self-discipline, holistic wellness, and consistent exercise. I also realized that not only did I have to take care of my physical health but also my spiritual health. The scare from the stroke made me realize that I needed more than just myself—I needed God. If I was going to fight for my life, I wanted to be in close contact with Him. At the rehab facility, I asked to speak to a pastor for prayer, they didn’t allow it. That was also a significant reason why I decided to leave.
This experience is also why I became a Healthy for Life facilitator through the American Heart and Stroke Foundation. My mission is to help others prioritize their health and be fully present to pursue their dreams, passions, and purpose. Together, we can build the resilience and motivation necessary to thrive.
